Teaching Resources for Schools

Stuart Hall Digital has supported the production of several resources for teaching and learning (available below), designed to promote critical thinking skills and deepen pupils’ understanding of race, media and culture.

Key Stage 1 and 2 Presentations (with teacher notes)

These teaching resources are intended to aid in classroom discussions around critical thinking, race, and the Stuart Hall Archive. Produced in consultation with experts in primary education, these resources can be used by teachers to engage with KS1/2 PSHE and History curriculum and personal development.

Several concepts around Hall’s work and biography have necessarily been simplified in order to utilise students’ prior learning at each key stage. Vocabulary is aligned with existing teaching schemes and popular providers in the UK.

Key Stage 1 Presentation

This powerpoint presentation offers a brief overview of some key ideas and information around Stuart Hall’s life and activism, targeted at pupils in Key Stage 1. Notes (both on slide 1 and in the ‘speaker notes’ section) are included to support teacher knowledge and facilitate class discussion.

Key Stage 2 Presentation

This powerpoint presentation is designed to introduce Stuart Hall to Key Stage 2 pupils, exploring the idea of a researcher’s archive and encouraging pupils to ‘think like Hall’ about popular culture. Notes (both on slide 1 and in the ‘speaker notes’ section) are included to support teacher knowledge and facilitate class discussion.

Key Stage 2 and 3 Resources

The resources below were produced by student interns at the University of Birmingham’s College of Arts and Law, and are intended to promote greater understanding of the archive for KS2 and KS3 students.

KS2 Teaching Resource, produced by Helen Cartledge

KS3 Framing Stuart for Sociology Students, produced by Charlie King

KS3 What Might Have Been on Stuart’s Bookshelf? produced by Analjeet Narayan
