In addition to digitising parts of Hall’s papers, Stuart Hall Digital seeks to experiment with how we mediate archives digitally, drawing on Hall’s own critical thinking about media.
Hall calls attention to the potential of new technological developments to reimagine forms of archival preservation, circulation, and interpretation (‘Constituting an Archive’ 2001). Stuart Hall Digital seeks to expand the digital archive beyond the digitisation process, thinking critically and creatively with Hall in the hope of opening up the archive’s materials and material forms to critical discourse, debate and reinterpretation. These projects have different imagined audiences–some are for scholars, others for students, tourists, and interested non-experts. These exploratory works include:
Walking with Hall, a mobile app which guides users to literally follow in Hall’s footsteps, mapping key locations in Birmingham.
A brief biography of Hall using open source KnightLab software.
A working bibliography of global cultural studies resources.
Hall’s Index, a mediation of Hall’s index cards which provides an easy-to-access overview of his research notes.
Encoding/Decoding Cybernetics, a research project exploring Hall’s impact on the history of communication theory and the architecture of large language models.
The Cultural Studies Database - an interactive compilation of all the items, people, and organisations mentioned in the Stuart Hall and Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies archives.
Dear Stuart: a digital Zine created by Birmingham-based artists that reinterprets the Stuart Hall Archive through practice-based creative research.
